On this 12 rai (4.7 acre) of land, most of its uses are dedicated to planting forest trees and edible plants. Only at the center, the tranquil part of the plot, next to the newly banked pond, is the most suitable place for a residential home. From public road to private, through the teak-lined curve pathway, the single-storey, gable house slowly reveals itself.
Like a large umbrella, the gable roof covers the building and the surrounding porch, allowing the house to have larger windows and openings for more ventilation and view. Its structure -- an equally spaced colonnade -- also serves as the elevation profiles. All these elements are combined to create a transitional ‘Grey Area’ where ample shading is provided for an efficient comfort zone.
In addition, a gable roof provides good ceiling height at a reasonable budget while not being tall proportionally. It makes the house feel ‘grounded’ to both the users and the surrounding context, inserting itself humbly into the large green area.
Due to the easy access nature of a single-storey house, zonings must be carefully considered. The house is a combination of 2 buildings: a parking garage with storage, and a 2-bedroom-2-bathroom home for retired parents and visiting families. The home building then separated into private and guest zones. The private quarter, which consists of bedrooms, bathroom, laundry room, and altar room, can be locked from the inside, away from the guest zone where visitors come and go. It can be further partitioned with only bedrooms and bathroom inside when the owners are ready for bedtime.
Being a cozy, calming garden home, one of the main purposes of this house is to host cooking and dining sessions for visiting family members, so the front-and-center kitchen zone with the 6-seat dining table is designed to seamlessly connect with the living room and semi-outdoor area in a single, continuous open plan layout.
