A canteen that prioritizes employees’ well-being.
Canteens are typically driven by functional and cost-efficient considerations. For Pimdee Canteen, the project shifts this baseline through a shared intention between owner, architect, and contractor to create not only a place for eating, but a more considered environment for everyday use.
With the expansion of the production line, the existing canteen was gradually absorbed into other functions and no longer sufficient. A new 470-sq.m canteen was therefore introduced on an adjacent plot, accommodating the increased number of employees while rethinking the quality of the space they occupy.
A canteen that is simple, flexible, and defined through its tectonic expression.
The project is conceived with an emphasis on openness and adaptability. The owner allows a high degree of flexibility in how the space is occupied and managed. In response, the design proposes two simple volumes, separating functions into a food preparation zone and a seating area.
Arranged in parallel, both structures are open-air, allowing natural ventilation and daylight to define the spatial experience. The roof structure extends outward, forming wing-like planes that provide shade while maintaining a light and permeable character.
All structural and service systems are intentionally exposed for ease of maintenance. Through careful proportioning and detailing, these elements are not concealed but articulated, forming a clear tectonic language that gives the project its identity.
